Have you ever lost track of time while listening to music, or felt completely at peace as a wave of sound washed over you? These moments are more than just relaxing - they may be signs that your brain has shifted into an altered state of consciousness (ASC), offering a powerful space for restoration, insight and connection.

What Are Altered States of Consciousness?

Altered states of consciousness, sometimes referred to as non-ordinary states, are unique psychological states in which our awareness shifts from its usual waking pattern into something more spacious, introspective, and expansive. These states naturally occur when our brain slows into alpha and theta wave frequencies - such as during deep meditation, daydreaming, creative flow, dreaming sleep, or through intentional practices like breathwork and sound meditation.

Unlike the altered states brought on by hallucinogens, those reached through sound therapy are entirely safe and gentle, and carry a wealth of benefits for our mind and body.

Sound and the Brain’s Shift Into ASC

Sound meditation uses deeply resonant instruments such as crystal singing bowls, Himalayan bowls, gongs, chimes and drums to guide us into altered states. The vibrational tones do more than just soothe - they entrain the brain, helping it move from busy, active beta waves into the slower, healing rhythms of alpha, theta and sometimes even delta.

When you meditate deeply or experience a sound bath, you allow your brain to remain in these lower brainwave frequencies for an extended period - giving it the time and space it needs to truly tap into an ASC and receive its full benefits. The more frequently you allow yourself to experience these deeply restful states, the more familiar they become. Over time, your brain may begin to stay in these frequencies more easily and for longer, strengthening the depth and richness of your altered state experiences.

In many ways, an ASC is like a mini holiday for the brain. It’s a chance to switch off from the demands of everyday life, to rest and recalibrate. During this time, the brain can repair cells, rebalance mineral levels, process imagery, store memories, and calm the nervous system. It's an essential pause in a fast-paced world.

What Might You Experience?

Every person’s experience of an ASC during sound meditation is completely unique - and that’s something I absolutely love. After each session, I find it so inspiring to hear people share what they felt, saw or sensed. No two journeys are the same.

Some common sensations include:

  • A sense of timelessness or spaciousness

  • Gentle visuals - shapes, colours, or dreamlike images behind closed eyes

  • Emotional release, breakthroughs or feelings of clarity

  • Floating, tingling or energetic sensations in the body

  • A deep connection to others or the wider universe

  • Bliss, stillness or a sense of spiritual insight

Some people drift into sleep. Others journey inward with vivid imagery. Some feel energised afterwards, while others feel deeply grounded and serene. Your experience is yours alone - your body and mind take what they need in that moment.

Why Explore Altered States?

Taking time to access altered states through sound meditation is a powerful way to:

  • Soothe and reset the nervous system

  • Boost emotional resilience and self-awareness

  • Enhance creativity and intuitive thinking

  • Support healing and inner balance

  • Improve sleep and reduce stress

  • Deepen your spiritual connection

These states can offer new perspectives - on your life, your challenges, your emotions, and your path. They allow you to see through a broader lens, from a place of clarity and calm that’s hard to access in everyday consciousness.

A Gentle Invitation

You don’t need to know anything about sound meditation to begin. Just bring yourself - open, curious, and willing to receive. Whether you’re looking for deep rest, emotional healing, or a new way to explore your inner world, sound can be a beautiful and safe doorway into the deeper layers of consciousness.

So give yourself permission to pause. To float. To dream. Let sound be your guide as you reconnect with the wisdom, stillness and spaciousness already within you.
